Description
1913 Philadelphia Indian Head Half Eagle ($5 Gold). This 1913-P Indian Head $5 gold piece represents a solid mid-range example of Bela Lyon Pratt's iconic design from the height of the series' production run. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 915,901 pieces, the 1913 is readily obtainable in lower Mint State grades but becomes increasingly scarce in the higher designations. The present specimen, graded PCGS MS-63 (Cert. #25202485), represents the sweet spot for collectors seeking an attractive, original example without the premium associated with finer grades. The 1913 is recognized as one of the better-produced years of the Indian Head half eagle series, typically displaying well-defined strike characteristics and finely granular surfaces. This issue exhibits the excellent luster and pleasing eye appeal for which the year is known, with the characteristic light to medium yellow-gold color that may display subtle greenish tones in certain lighting. The coin's technical specifications remain consistent with the series standard: 90% gold and 10% copper composition, 8.36 grams, and 21.6mm diameter with reeded edge. Population data indicates that while approximately 3,156 examples have been certified by PCGS across all grades, with 1,233 graded higher than MS-63, specimens in the MS-63 range remain popular among collectors seeking quality and value. The 1913 cannot be considered truly rare in this grade, making it an accessible entry point for those building type sets or pursuing the Indian Head half eagle series. An excellent opportunity to acquire a well-produced example of this classic American gold coin.
