Description
1888 Philadelphia Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-63. This Liberty Gold Dollar represents a key date in the final years of this iconic series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with no mintmark. Designed by the prolific James Barton Longacre, this diminutive gold coin displays the characteristic obverse Liberty head and reverse eagle that defined the series from 1849 through 1889. The coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams with a diameter of 14.3mm and reeded edge. Graded PCGS MS-63 (Certificate #05512452), this example exhibits the attractive luster and eye appeal expected of the grade. While the 1888 boasts a mintage of 15,501 pieces—substantially higher than immediately preceding dates—market data and collector experience indicate this date maintains near-parity with earlier 1880s issues in terms of actual rarity. Despite its relatively higher mintage figure, original pieces in all grades remain moderately scarce, with gem uncirculated examples readily available to collectors. The PCGS population data reflects 215 total graded examples, with 677 coins certified in higher grades, underscoring the date's accessibility to collectors while confirming its enduring appeal. This represents a solid example of this final-year Liberty Dollar issue, suitable for type collectors and series enthusiasts alike.
