Description
1929 Philadelphia $2.50 Indian Head Gold Coin, PCGS MS-64. This 1929 $2.50 Indian Head quarter eagle represents a significant example of one of the most challenging dates in the later Indian Head series. Designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, this piece exhibits the characteristic features that define quality specimens from this final year of issue. The coin displays excellent lustre and the typical rich yellow gold coloration with greenish tint associated with this date, while the strike shows the generally good definition expected from this issue, though minor die buckling at the borders is occasionally noted on examples from this period. The MS-64 grade is particularly noteworthy for the 1929 date, as this issue presents a remarkable condition rarity in the later Indian Head $2.50 series. While lower grades through MS-63 can be found with relative frequency, the jump to MS-64 and higher grades becomes dramatically more difficult. The 1929 stands apart from other late-date quarter eagles in this regard—true gem examples are considerably scarcer, and pieces grading MS-65 or better are genuinely rare in the market. Superior examples in MS-67 condition are major rarities, with very few known to exist. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 532,000 pieces, this quarter eagle contains 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams with a reeded edge. PCGS Certificate #25243279 provides authentication and grading for this significant piece, which represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a high-quality example of this challenging date without the extreme rarity premium of higher grades.
