Description
1874 Gold Dollar, Type III, PCGS MS-65. This 1874 Philadelphia Mint gold dollar represents a readily collectible example of the Type III Liberty gold dollar series (1873-1889). Struck during the final decades of gold dollar coinage, this piece displays the classic design by James Barton Longacre featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle wreath on the reverse. The coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams with a diameter of 14.3mm and reeded edge. The MS-65 grade from PCGS reflects a gem uncirculated specimen with light surface marks consistent with the grade. According to PCGS population data, 151 examples have been graded higher than this piece, with 198 total submissions of the 1874 Philadelphia issue, indicating this is a commonly encountered date in the series. The original mintage of 198,800 coins supports its availability in the marketplace. As noted in numismatic literature, the 1874 is among the most common Type III gold dollars alongside the 1862, making it an excellent entry point for collectors building a type set or assembling a complete Liberty gold dollar collection. The 1874 is known to exist in multiple varieties, including examples with full LIBERTY, partial LIBERTY, and missing LIBERTY inscriptions, adding an additional layer of interest for variety specialists.
