Description
1903-O Morgan Dollar, PCGS MS-65. This exceptional 1903-O Morgan dollar represents one of the most historically significant and storied issues in American numismatics. Struck at the New Orleans Mint during a year when 4.45 million circulation strikes were produced, this coin carries remarkable provenance tied to one of the hobby's greatest treasure discoveries. Graded PCGS MS-65 (Certificate #64253570), this example exhibits the attractive frosty lustre characteristic of the best examples from this famous hoard, with relatively few bagmarks despite its century-plus lifespan. The 1903-O holds legendary status in Morgan dollar collecting. Prior to October 1962, Mint State examples were believed virtually non-existent—estimated at fewer than 10 known specimens—making it the rarest Morgan dollar of its era. This scarcity reflected the fact that most of the original mintage was melted under the 1918 Pittman Act, while coins remaining at the New Orleans Mint were sealed in a Philadelphia vault in 1929, remaining undiscovered for 33 years. The dramatic October 1962 release of approximately 200,000 to 350,000 Mint State coins from Treasury vaults revolutionized the silver dollar market and captured international numismatic attention. MS-65 specimens remain readily available but desirable, particularly sharply struck examples. Population data indicates approximately 1,447 coins have been certified finer than this grade, with 2,990 total graded across all services. The coin's 90% silver composition and excellent eye appeal make it both a historically significant collectible and a tangible piece of American monetary heritage. A landmark issue in any Morgan dollar collection.
