Description

1923 Peace Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, MS-66 PCGS. This exceptional MS-66 example of the 1923 Peace Dollar represents one of the finest available examples of this highly collectible issue. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint (no mintmark) during a period of massive coinage production, this specimen exhibits the strong strike and pleasing aesthetics characteristic of the best 1923 Peace dollars. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the coin displays the iconic Lady Liberty and eagle reverse that defined this beloved series. The obverse and reverse showcase excellent detail preservation and the frosty white to metallic luster typical of high-grade survivors from this prolific mintage. The 1923 Peace Dollar occupies a unique position in numismatic history. Despite a massive mintage of 30,800,000 coins, most were stored rather than circulated, as dollars held little utility in Eastern commerce during the 1920s. Remarkably, the 1923 was once considered rare in Mint State during the early 1940s—commanding premium prices at major auctions—only to become commonplace when vast quantities emerged from bank vaults beginning in 1945. Today, it stands as one of the most obtainable Peace dollars in high grades, making it an ideal type coin for collectors seeking quality without the premium prices of scarcer dates. This PCGS MS-66 example sits comfortably above the typical MS-63 to MS-64 range common to the date. With only 159 examples graded higher by PCGS out of 367 total certified, this coin represents the upper echelon of preserved 1923 Peace dollars. The combination of eye appeal, technical quality, and relative rarity in this grade makes it an attractive acquisition for type collectors and Peace dollar specialists alike. Certified as PCGS #54918060.
