Description
1928 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold, PCGS MS-65. This exceptional 1928 Philadelphia Mint quarter eagle represents a significant offering from the final years of the Indian Head $2 1/2 series. Designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, this gem-quality specimen exhibits the hallmarks of superior preservation rarely encountered in this issue. The coin displays characteristic frosty surfaces with excellent luster and attractive light to medium gold coloring with subtle greenish tones typical of well-preserved examples from this vintage. The 1928 is notably scarcer than its immediate predecessors, particularly in higher grades. While MS-63 and lower specimens remain obtainable, this date proves considerably more elusive in MS-64 and above. At the MS-65 gem level, this coin is genuinely rare, with relatively few examples known to exist beyond this grade. Among 445 total examples graded by PCGS, only 39 specimens have achieved higher grades, underscoring the rarity of this particular piece. Struck from 416,000 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint, this quarter eagle is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams with a reeded edge. The coin is generally well-struck with minor striking anomalies occasionally visible at the borders, characteristic of production from this period. PCGS Certification #33016703 provides authentication and grade verification for this desirable gem.
