Description

1913 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Coin, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 $2 1/2 represents a notable example from the final two decades of the Indian Head quarter eagle series designed by renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with no mintmark, this issue produced 722,000 pieces, yet remains underappreciated among collectors despite its moderate rarity compared to other dates in the series. The offered specimen achieves a PCGS MS-63 grade (Cert. #20325757), placing it among the finer examples of this date. The 1913 is recognized for superior striking quality and decidedly above-average luster relative to other years in the series, particularly when compared to the 1911 and 1912 issues. As is typical for Indian Head quarter eagles, the surfaces display the characteristic granular texture common to the denomination. The coin exhibits the series' typical light to medium yellow gold color. Population data indicates 1,339 examples have been certified in grades higher than MS-63, with 1,801 total graded across all grades, underscoring that gem condition examples (MS-65 and above) remain genuinely scarce. Superb examples grading MS-67 are known but rarely appear at public auction. This represents a solid, collectible example of an undervalued Philadelphia Mint issue with excellent eye appeal and technical merit for the grade.
