Description
1926 Philadelphia Indian Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS65. The 1926 $2.50 Indian Head gold coin represents the twelfth and penultimate issue in Bela Lyon Pratt's acclaimed recessed-design series. This Philadelphia Mint example was produced from a standard mintage of 446,000 pieces during the final years of the denomination's production, which ceased permanently in 1929. The coin is one of two quarter eagles struck in 1926, sharing the year with the American Sesquicentennial Commemorative issue. Graded MS65 by PCGS (Certificate #54921086), this example displays the characteristic frosty, highly lustrous surfaces and warm golden hues typical of quality Mint State specimens from this series. Occasional examples exhibit patches of orange-red toning, adding to their visual appeal. With a population of 168 coins graded higher than this piece out of 930 total certified, the 1926 represents a conditionally scarce issue in Gem grades above MS65. Technical Details: 90% gold, 10% copper composition; 4.18g; 18mm diameter; reeded edge. Numismatist David Akers ranked this date 13th of 15 for Gem availability in his foundational 1975 analysis, noting it slightly scarcer than the popular 1925-D but still readily obtainable in lower Mint State grades—a assessment that has remained consistent throughout decades of PCGS certification.
