Description
1913 Indian Head Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 $2 1/2 gold piece represents an underappreciated issue in the Indian Head quarter eagle series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 722,000 pieces, this example has been certified by PCGS as MS-63 (Certificate #25571875). Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin weighs 4.18 grams and measures 18mm in diameter with a reeded edge. Designed by the acclaimed Bela Lyon Pratt, this issue displays the characteristic features that define the series. The 1913 date occupies a unique position within the Indian Head quarter eagle coinage. While only marginally less rare than the 1912 overall, the distinction between the 1912, 1909, 1910, and 1911 issues remains quite subtle. However, in gem condition (MS-65 or better), the 1913 becomes exceptionally scarce and difficult to locate, with only a handful of superb MS-67 examples known to exist. Population data reflects this rarity: of 1,801 total examples graded by PCGS, only 1,339 have achieved higher grades than this specimen. The 1913 is typically well-struck with decidedly above-average luster for the series—notably superior to the typical 1911 or 1912 example. Like most Indian Head $2.5 and $5 issues, the surfaces display the characteristic granular texture common to the series. The color presents as light to medium yellow gold, consistent with the 1909 and 1910 issues. This MS-63 example represents a solid collector opportunity for this often-overlooked date.
