Description

1874 Philadelphia Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-63. This Liberty Gold Dollar represents a popular issue from the final years of the Type III design series. The 1874-P is among the most readily available dates in the Liberty gold dollar series, with a mintage of 198,800 pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Designed by the renowned James Barton Longacre, this small gold coin showcases the elegant obverse and reverse designs characteristic of the Type III coinage produced from 1873 to 1889. The present example has been certified by PCGS as MS-63, indicating a choice uncirculated specimen with attractive eye appeal and minimal surface disturbance. With an original weight of 1.7 grams and composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this coin retains its full luster and design detail. The reeded edge remains intact, confirming its authenticity as a genuine U.S. Mint product from this period. Like other 1874 gold dollars, this issue exhibits the variety of die states known to collectors, with examples displaying full LIBERTY legends, partial LIBERTY, or missing LIBERTY inscriptions depending on die wear and state. The availability of this date in all grades, including gem uncirculated examples, makes it an excellent entry point for collectors building a comprehensive gold dollar collection. This particular MS-63 example offers strong eye appeal and represents solid value for the discerning collector of classic U.S. gold coinage.
