Description

1913 Philadelphia Indian Head Half Eagle, PCGS MS-63. This handsome example of Bela Lyon Pratt's iconic Indian Head half eagle design represents a solid mid-grade example of a scarce Philadelphia Mint issue. The 1913 Philadelphia is readily obtainable in lower Mint State grades, but specimens become increasingly difficult to locate as one ascends the grading scale. This PCGS MS-63 certified piece (Cert. #25202485) occupies an important position within the series, representing a grade where quality specimens remain accessible to discerning collectors seeking above-average examples without the significant premiums demanded by higher grades. The coin exhibits the characteristic features that make the 1913 one of the more aesthetically pleasing issues of the Indian Head half eagle series. Struck from fresh dies at the Philadelphia Mint, this piece displays crisp definition across both obverse and reverse, with finely granular surfaces and notably good luster for the assigned grade. The surfaces present the typical light to medium yellow gold color associated with the issue, with the potential for attractive greenish undertones that occasionally appear on examples from this vintage. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper and weighing 8.36 grams, this $5 gold piece represents both a significant numismatic artifact and a tangible store of precious metal. With a Philadelphia Mint production of 915,901 pieces and a relatively modest population of just 1,237 examples graded higher by PCGS, the 1913 remains a genuinely scarce issue in the context of the broader Indian Head half eagle series. This MS-63 example offers collectors an excellent opportunity to acquire a quality representative of this classic early 20th-century gold coinage.
