Description

1913 Indian Head $5 Gold Piece, Philadelphia Mint. This 1913 $5 Indian Head half eagle represents a solid example from the final two decades of this iconic series. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the coin displays the distinctive incused design characteristic of this popular issue. Graded PCGS MS-63 (Certificate #9661380), this piece exemplifies the quality and eye appeal typical of well-preserved specimens from this year. The 1913 Philadelphia Mint issue produced 915,901 pieces and occupies an interesting position within the series—essentially equivalent in rarity to the 1912, these coins are readily obtainable in lower Mint State grades but become increasingly scarce above MS-64. The present example represents an accessible entry point for collectors seeking this date. This issue is typically well-struck with finely granular surfaces and excellent lustre, and the 1913 ranks among the better-looking issues of the series in high grade. The coin exhibits characteristic light to medium yellow gold coloration, with some specimens showing an attractive greenish tint. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this piece contains approximately 0.2419 troy ounces of pure gold. With a mintage of over 915,000 pieces, the 1913 remains available to collectors, though quality examples in MS-63 and above become progressively harder to locate. An excellent opportunity to acquire a well-preserved example of this final-era Indian Head half eagle.
