Description

1911 Philadelphia $5 Indian Head Half Eagle, PCGS MS-63. This 1911 $5 Indian Head half eagle represents a significant example from one of the most challenging series in American numismatics. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with no mintmark, this piece exhibits the characteristic features of the issue while achieving a respectable MS-63 grade from PCGS (Certificate #64615473). The 1911 is among the more frequently encountered dates within the Indian Head half eagle series, yet examples in MS-63 condition remain notably scarce, with only 1,197 specimens graded higher across all services. Designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, this half eagle features the iconic Native American motif on the obverse and an eagle in repose on the reverse. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, the coin weighs 8.36 grams with a diameter of 21.6mm and reeded edge. Like many examples of this date, the strike is typically uneven, particularly on the obverse where the feathers of the headdress often show weakness. The surfaces display the characteristic granular texture common to the series, with lustre that is good rather than radiant. The color presents as light to medium yellow or greenish-yellow gold, typical for the issue. The 1911 represents a transitional point in the series' production, with a mintage of 915,000 pieces. While this figure might suggest ready availability, the harsh reality is that most examples remain heavily circulated or impaired. In gem condition, the 1911 is genuinely rare, and this MS-63 example represents the type of quality that serious collectors of Indian Head half eagles actively pursue. An excellent opportunity for the advanced collector seeking a solid representative of this important series.
