Description
1851 Gold Dollar, Type 1 Liberty Head, Philadelphia Mint. The Gold Dollar was introduced in 1849 to facilitate commerce following the California Gold Rush, offering everyday Americans a portable alternative to larger denominations. Designed by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, Type 1 Gold Dollars (1849-1854) feature Liberty on the obverse and a wreath with denomination on the reverse. Measuring 12.7mm in diameter and weighing 1.7 grams, these coins are composed of 90% gold and 10% copper with reeded edges. The 1851 Philadelphia Mint issue represents one of the most prolific dates of the series, with a mintage of 3,317,671 examples—the second-highest for Type 1. This particular specimen, graded PCGS 63, represents a Gem example that performs well against its peers. According to PCGS population data, this grade sits near the upper end of commonly encountered examples, with MS62 and MS63 dominating the census. Notably, only 611 examples grade higher than this coin, out of 620 total graded submissions. The 1851 Gold Dollar falls into the "common" category from a collector's perspective, making it an accessible entry point for those seeking Type 1 representation. While many survivors exist in lower grades, Gem examples such as this demonstrate the quality coins that can emerge from original hoards. The combination of strong eye appeal and technical certification makes this an attractive offering for both type collectors and those building comprehensive gold dollar collections. PCGS Certificate #64615461.
