Description
1926 Philadelphia $2 1/2 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS-63. This attractive $2 1/2 Indian Head quarter eagle represents one of the most accessible dates in this popular series designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. The 1926-P carries a mintage of 446,000 pieces, making it one of the most frequently encountered issues from the 1908-1929 production run. The present example has been graded PCGS MS-63 (Certificate #82144734), a solid mid-range Mint State designation that captures the coin's original luster and eye appeal while remaining readily available to collectors. The coin exhibits the characteristic qualities that have made this date a favorite among collectors: frosty, lustrous surfaces with a sharp strike and well-defined design elements. The $2 1/2 denomination is notable for its composition of 90% gold and 10% copper, with a weight of 4.18 grams and diameter of 18mm. The color of this piece displays the warm tones typical of the series, though examples can range from pale rose gold to rich greenish gold hues depending on original striking and patina. While the 1926 is not difficult to locate in circulated grades and lower Mint State levels, examples at MS-63 and above become increasingly challenging to acquire, particularly those with the strong eye appeal and luster evident in finer specimens. The population data reflects this scarcity in higher grades, with relatively few pieces grading above MS-65. This example represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a quality representative of this popular date.
