Description
1913 Indian Head Half Eagle, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 $5 gold piece represents a desirable example from the final two decades of the Indian Head half eagle series designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 915,901 pieces, this issue is readily obtainable in lower Mint State grades but becomes increasingly scarce in MS-64 and above. The present coin, certified by PCGS as MS-63, occupies a sweet spot for collectors seeking an attractive example without the premium associated with higher grades. The 1913 is recognized among series specialists for its typically excellent strike quality and appealing aesthetic characteristics. This specimen exhibits the finely granular surfaces and excellent luster that distinguish well-preserved examples of this date. The color is characteristic of the issue—light to medium yellow gold—with the potential for attractive greenish tinting occasionally observed in specimens of this vintage. The reeded edge and precise specifications (8.36g, 21.6mm diameter, 90% gold composition) confirm the coin's authenticity and standard for the type. Population data indicates this grade level remains accessible within the broader context of the series, with 1,236 examples graded finer at PCGS and 3,170 total examples certified. While exceptional pieces in MS-65 and above constitute a rarefied segment of the market, the MS-63 grade provides collectors with a fundamentally sound, attractive example of this important pre-1933 gold issue at a reasonable market valuation.
