Description
1928 Indian Head $2.50 Gold Coin, PCGS MS-64. This attractive example of the 1928 Indian Head Quarter Eagle represents a significant offering from this moderately scarce date. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 416,000 pieces, the 1928 is notably more elusive in higher grades than its immediate predecessors of 1926 and 1927. The present coin, certified by PCGS as MS-64, occupies an important position within the issue's rarity spectrum—while MS-63 and lower specimens are readily available to collectors, the MS-64 grade becomes considerably more challenging to locate. Gems (MS-65 and above) are genuinely scarce, with relatively few examples known beyond MS-65, making such premium quality pieces extremely rare in the marketplace. The coin exhibits the characteristic qualities typical of well-preserved 1928 quarter eagles. The surfaces display very frosty luster with good eye appeal, light to medium gold coloration with greenish tones—the typical appearance for this date, though some specimens are known with lighter rose-gold hues. The strike is generally well-executed, though as is sometimes encountered with this issue, minor striking anomalies may be present, most notably at the borders. The reverse and obverse, designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, are rendered with his distinctive recessed design elements characteristic of this popular series (1908-1929). Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this $2.50 piece weighs 4.18 grams and measures 18mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The PCGS certification (Holder #55900878) provides confidence in the grade assessment and authentication of this desirable pre-1933 gold coin, suitable for both type collectors and those building comprehensive Indian Head quarter eagle sets.
