Description
1913 Indian Head $5 Gold Coin, Philadelphia Mint. A handsome example of Bela Lyon Pratt's iconic Indian Head half eagle design, this 1913-P $5 gold piece offers strong eye appeal and excellent striking quality. The coin displays the characteristic features that make this issue desirable to collectors: finely granular surfaces with very good to excellent luster, and attractive light to medium yellow gold coloring. The strike is notably sharp, with crisp definition on both the obverse and reverse, contributing to the overall eye appeal typical of well-executed specimens from this period. Graded PCGS MS-63, this piece represents a solid mid-range Mint State example of the date. While 1913 is essentially on par with 1912 in terms of overall rarity, specimens in MS-63 and lower grades can be located with relative ease. The grade represents a meaningful jump in rarity compared to lower grades, yet remains more accessible than the scarcer MS-64 and especially MS-65 examples that command significant premiums. With a mintage of 915,901 pieces, the date itself is not rare, but quality Mint State examples become increasingly elusive. Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper with a weight of 8.36 grams and diameter of 21.6mm, this is a classic pre-1933 U.S. gold coin combining numismatic appeal with intrinsic value. The reeded edge is intact and well-preserved. PCGS Certificate #25202485.
