Description
1926 Philadelphia $2.50 Indian Head Gold Coin, PCGS MS-63. This 1926 $2.50 Indian Head quarter eagle represents one of the most accessible and desirable issues of the series designed by renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 446,000 pieces, the 1926 remains among the most commonly encountered dates, though examples in higher grades become increasingly scarce. The coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams with a diameter of 18mm and reeded edge. Certified by PCGS as MS-63, this specimen exhibits the characteristic qualities that make the 1926 a favorite among collectors. The coin displays the frosty, lustrous surfaces and sharp strike typical of well-preserved examples from this issue. Color variation is notable throughout the series, and this piece displays the attractive golden tone sought by discerning collectors. The eye appeal of top-grade specimens of this date is considered among the finest in the entire Indian Head quarter eagle series. The MS-63 grade represents a significant milestone for this relatively common date, as examples in MS-64 and below are readily available, but true gems become substantially more difficult to locate. Population data indicates 4,770 coins have been graded finer, with a total of 4,062 examples certified in this grade or better, underscoring the availability of this issue compared to scarcer dates in the series.
