Description
1929 Indian Head Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS-64. This 1929 Philadelphia Mint $2 1/2 gold coin represents a significant example of one of the most challenging dates in the Indian Head quarter eagle series. Struck from a mintage of 532,000 pieces, this issue presents a notable paradox in the market: while lower grades remain relatively obtainable, examples in MS-64 condition and above are surprisingly scarce. The present specimen, certified by PCGS with certificate number 25243279, exemplifies this scarcity at the Choice Mint State level. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this quarter eagle is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams with a diameter of 18mm and reeded edge. The strike quality is typically very good, though some specimens exhibit minor die buckling at the borders. The 1929 displays the characteristic rich yellow gold color with greenish tint commonly seen in this issue, accompanied by nearly always excellent luster. The 1929 stands as the major condition rarity among the later-date $2.5 Indians, with gems and superb examples commanding considerable premiums. Population data reflects this scarcity, with only 325 examples graded finer than MS-64 across all grading services. True MS-67 examples are exceptionally rare in the market, making this MS-64 specimen an important acquisition opportunity for serious collectors of this popular series.
