Description

1887 Liberty Gold Dollar, Type III. This 1887-P $1 gold piece represents one of the most accessible and popular examples of the Type III Liberty Gold Dollar series (1878-1889). Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of just 7,500 pieces, this issue remains readily available to collectors in choice uncirculated grades. The coin exhibits the hallmark design of James Barton Longacre, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle with shield on the reverse. Graded PCGS MS-65, this example displays the lustrous, well-preserved surfaces characteristic of high-grade specimens from this series. The technical specifications reflect the standard gold dollar composition of the era: 90% gold and 10% copper, with a weight of 1.7 grams and diameter of 14.3 millimeters. The reeded edge provides additional security against the common practice of coin clipping that plagued earlier issues. Population data indicates this date and grade combination is moderately represented in the certified market, with 128 examples graded higher and 98 total certified examples, suggesting availability for serious collectors. At this grade level, the coin offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a Type III gold dollar in attractive uncirculated condition. The PCGS Certificate Number 12028815 provides full authentication and grading documentation.
