Description
# 1902 Morgan Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, MS-65 PCGS. GSA Hoard Specimen. This exceptional 1902-P Morgan dollar represents a significant example from the famous GSA Hoard releases that fundamentally changed the availability of high-grade Philadelphia Mint dollars in the numismatic market. Graded MS-65 by PCGS (Certificate #58427115), this coin exemplifies the quality specimens that emerged from Treasury distributions in the late 1950s, when large quantities of stored Morgan dollars entered circulation for the first time in decades. The 1902 Philadelphia issue is particularly notable as the first Morgan dollar date to employ the C-4 reverse hub on all dies, marking an important transitional point in the series' design evolution. Interesting die varieties exist from reverse dies created by impressing the new C-4 hub over the old C-3, distinguished by the characteristic "2 Olive Reverse." The coin's composition of 90% silver and 10% copper with a weight of 26.73 grams reflects the standard specifications for the series. Most 1902 dollars exhibit satiny rather than deeply frosty surfaces, with striking quality ranging from poor to sharp; this MS-65 example likely displays the above-average characteristics typical of the finest surviving examples. MS-65 specimens of the 1902-P are genuinely scarce, with an estimated population of only 5,000 to 10,000 coins across all grades MS-65 and above. While Mint State dollars from this date are relatively plentiful in lower ranges (MS-60 through MS-63), the jump to MS-65 represents a significant rarity threshold. Population data reflects 1,091 coins graded higher than this specimen among 2,065 total PCGS submissions, underscoring the desirability of this quality level. The GSA Hoard provenance and strong eye appeal at this grade make this an attractive offering for collectors seeking quality 1902 Morgans.
