Description
1936 Elgin Commemorative Half Dollar, MS67. This 1936 Elgin half dollar represents one of the iconic issues from the prolific commemorative boom of the 1930s. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 20,015 pieces, the Elgin was distributed widely at its original issue price of $1.75, resulting in excellent survival rates today. Among the commemoratives of similar mintage from this era, the Elgin occupies a middle ground in rarity—more scarce than issues like the Norfolk and Wisconsin, but more readily available than the Robinson or Connecticut. Graded PCGS MS67, this example represents an exceptional specimen. The Elgin's design exhibits relatively modest relief, making pristine examples with minimal marks and abrasions particularly desirable. This coin displays the characteristic white frosty luster typical of the issue, with a matte-like appearance that is consistent with well-preserved examples from this period. The MS67 grade places this coin well above the typical survivor, which generally grades in the MS63 to MS67 range. Technical Details: 90% silver, 10% copper composition; 12.5 grams; 30.6mm diameter; reeded edge. Designed by Trygve Rovelstad. PCGS Certificate #34626971. Population data indicates 74 coins graded higher and 324 total graded across all grades, reflecting the availability of quality examples for collectors seeking this popular commemorative issue.
