Description
1935-D Washington Quarter, PCGS MS67. This exceptional 1935-D Washington Quarter represents a significant offering within the classic early Washington Quarter series. The coin exhibits the characteristic features of Denver Mint production from this formative period, struck from dies utilizing the "Medium Motto" hub—a transitional design phase between the problematic 1932 original and the standardized 1936 "Heavy Motto" that would follow. The motto lettering on this example displays notably sharper definition than earlier strikes, demonstrating the Mint's ongoing refinement of the design during these critical developmental years. The 1935-D holds particular importance as a semi-key date in the series. With a mintage of 5,780,000 pieces, it represents the Denver Mint's second Washington Quarter release and its highest quarter output since 1918. Despite this substantial production figure, Gem examples remain notably scarce in the marketplace. The present coin's PCGS MS67 grade places it among the finest known examples, with only 12 coins graded finer by PCGS across a population of just 35 total submissions—a remarkable rarity indicator for this issue. Among Denver Mint issues, the 1935-D ranks as one of the most challenging to acquire in Gem condition, notably more difficult than its 1935-S counterpart despite the S-Mint's own scarcity reputation. Within the PCGS Set Registry, competition for high-grade examples remains intense. The present specimen exhibits excellent strike definition and bright, lustrous surfaces typical of the finest examples of this date and mint. Certification: PCGS MS67, Certificate #54926831
