Description

1886 Morgan Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-67. A stunning example of one of the most prolific Morgan dollars ever minted, this 1886-P silver dollar has been certified by PCGS as MS-67, placing it well above the typical circulating grades found for this date. The coin displays the classic design by George T. Morgan, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. Struck on a planchet composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, this piece retains its original weight of 26.73 grams and displays the reeded edge characteristic of the denomination. The Philadelphia Mint produced a record-breaking 19,963,000 circulation strike dollars in 1886, surpassing all previous production records for the denomination. This massive coinage, combined with subsequent Treasury releases—particularly in December 1954 and again in 1962-1964—ensured that 1886 dollars became among the most common Morgan dollars available to collectors. However, examples in higher Mint State grades, particularly MS-67, are considerably more elusive. With only 214 coins graded finer by PCGS out of 774 total submissions, this piece ranks among the finest known examples of the date. The 1886-P is notable for striking variation, with quality ranging from weak to sharp. Well-struck examples with attractive luster command premiums over average specimens. This particular coin's MS-67 certification suggests superior eye appeal and striking characteristics. While circulated examples of this date remain commonplace, Mint State coins in this grade represent significant numismatic value and desirability among Morgan dollar specialists.
