Description

1971-D Eisenhower Dollar, PCGS MS67. This exceptional example of the 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar represents one of the finest specimens of Denver's inaugural year of production for this important commemorative series. Struck at the Denver Mint early in the year—several weeks before Philadelphia commenced production—this coin benefits from the superior striking quality that characterizes Denver's output during this period. The Denver facility's older presses paradoxically produced sharper, cleaner strikes with excellent luster, contrasting markedly with the typically dull, chattery Philadelphia issues of the same year. The PCGS MS67 grade reflects exceptional quality for the issue, with only 14 examples graded higher across the entire population of 91 coins certified by PCGS. This represents the upper echelon of 1971-D dollars, placing it among the most desirable specimens available to collectors. The coin exhibits the lustrous, well-struck characteristics typical of Denver's best production, with crisp detail on both obverse and reverse. The substantial original mintage of 68,587,424 pieces at Denver has not translated into common high-grade survivors, making this MS67 example particularly significant for serious collectors. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel over a pure copper center, this 38.5mm coin weighing 22.7 grams features Frank Gasparro's celebrated designs honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower and commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The reeded edge and exceptional preservation make this an outstanding representative of the Eisenhower Dollar series at its finest.
