Description
1936 50C Elgin Commemorative, MS67. This MS67-graded Elgin half dollar represents an excellent example from the prolific commemorative era of the 1930s. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 20,015 pieces, this iconic commemorative was designed by Trygve Rovelstad and composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. The coin exhibits the characteristic white frosty luster typical of well-preserved Elgins from this period, with minimal marks and abrasions—a testament to its careful preservation over nearly nine decades. The Elgin commemorative holds a notable place within the 1934-1939 commemorative boom, when the U.S. Mint produced numerous special issues celebrating regional and national heritage. While not among the scarcest issues of this era, the Elgin remains moderately challenging to locate in high grades. The majority of surviving examples grade between MS63 and MS67, making this MS67 specimen a desirable choice for collectors seeking quality without extreme rarity premiums. PCGS has graded 331 examples total, with only 73 certified finer than this coin. The relatively flat design characteristic of the Elgin makes pristine examples particularly noteworthy, as marks and surface abrasions are commonplace on survivors. This example's MS67 designation indicates exceptional eye appeal with minimal imperfections, positioning it among the finest available to collectors. An ideal addition to any commemorative collection or silver holdings. *PCGS Certification #50103579*
