Description
# 1908 $20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, No Motto, Wells Fargo Discovery. A Legendary Rarity from the Historic Wells Fargo Hoard. This exceptional 1908 $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle represents one of the most significant discoveries in modern numismatic history. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint and bearing the distinctive No Motto reverse, this coin is part of the legendary Wells Fargo Discovery—a hoard of approximately 9,900 pristine examples unearthed in the early 1990s by dealer Ron Gillio. The hoard, named for the Las Vegas Wells Fargo bank where initial transactions occurred, fundamentally transformed the market for high-grade St. Gaudens coinage and remains the largest cache of ultra-premium quality $20 Saints ever discovered. The Wells Fargo hoard was extraordinary in its quality, containing thousands of superb gems graded MS66, nearly 1,000 coins certified MS67, 101 examples graded MS68, and remarkably, just ten coins achieving MS69—the only St. Gaudens Double Eagles ever graded MS69 by PCGS as of 2009. These ten specimens represented virtually perfect gems, representing the pinnacle of the hoard's incredible preservation. The discovery stands in stark contrast to the typically worn and heavily circulated examples of the 1908 No Motto issue normally encountered in the market. Technical Details: Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this coin weighs 33.4 grams and measures 34mm in diameter with a lettered edge. The No Motto variety, struck from the Wells Fargo die variety, represents a scarce and historically significant type. With a mintage of 4,271,551 pieces and NGC population data showing 974 coins graded higher and 4,547 total graded examples, this represents a well-documented issue within the certified population. An outstanding opportunity to acquire a piece of numismatic history from one of the hobby's most celebrated discoveries.
