Description

1971-D Eisenhower Dollar, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar represents the first year of production for this iconic commemorative series, struck at the Denver Mint during its initial coinage run. The coin exhibits the characteristic sharp strike and lustrous surfaces that distinguish Denver Mint issues from their Philadelphia counterparts, which frequently suffered from dull finishes and annealing chatter marks. With a mintage of 68,587,424 pieces, the 1971-D remains relatively common in circulation grades, but high-grade specimens command significant collector interest. Graded PCGS MS-67 (Certificate #25696091), this coin displays excellent eye appeal with bright, original luster and minimal contact marks consistent with the grade. The sharp strike quality evident on Eisenhower's profile and the reverse eagle demonstrates the superior die work achieved by Denver's older presses during this period. Population data shows only 14 examples graded higher by PCGS, with just 89 total submissions, underscoring the rarity of well-preserved specimens at this level. The Eisenhower Dollar series holds significant numismatic importance as the first circulating dollar coin struck in the United States since 1935. Authorized following President Eisenhower's death in 1969, the series employed a copper-nickel clad composition (75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center) weighing 22.7 grams. The reverse features Frank Gasparro's iconic eagle-on-the-moon design, commemorating the Apollo 11 mission. This MS-67 example represents a choice specimen of the series' inaugural Denver issue, combining historical significance with strong market fundamentals.
