Description

1936 50C Elgin Commemorative Half Dollar, MS67. This MS67-graded example of the 1936 Elgin commemorative half dollar represents a premium survivor from one of the most prolific commemorative eras in American numismatic history. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the celebrated "commemorative boom" of 1934-1939, this piece was among the 20,015 coins distributed at the original issue price of $1.75. The Elgin commemorative enjoys moderate availability compared to many of its contemporaries, with most surviving examples concentrated in the MS63-MS67 range, making this MS67 specimen a desirable mid-to-upper tier example. Designed by Trygve Rovelstad, the obverse and reverse exhibit the characteristic flat relief typical of this issue, resulting in marks and abrasions that are commonly encountered on survivors. Despite this design consideration, quality Gem examples with minimal contact marks do exist and remain obtainable for focused collectors. This piece displays the typical white frosty luster associated with the Elgin, presenting an appealing aesthetic characteristic of well-preserved specimens from this series. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper with a weight of 12.5 grams and diameter of 30.6mm, this half dollar meets the standard specifications for commemorative coinage of its era. PCGS has certified this example under Certificate #34626971, with population data indicating 74 coins graded finer and 324 total examples certified—statistics that underscore the availability of this issue while confirming the relative scarcity of higher grades. An excellent addition to any commemorative collection or silver coinage holding.
