Description

1896 Morgan Dollar, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-67. This exceptional example of the 1896 Philadelphia Morgan dollar represents one of the finest specimens of this popular date. Graded PCGS MS-67 (Certificate #44199865), the coin displays the superior striking quality characteristic of Philadelphia Mint dollars from this period, with well-defined details throughout. The obverse presents the iconic profile of Liberty as designed by George T. Morgan, while the reverse features a majestic eagle rendered with crisp definition. Luster ranges from frosty to moderately bright, and the overall eye appeal is notably strong for the issue. The 1896-P is among the most frequently encountered Morgan dollars of the 1890s, with a substantial mintage of 9,976,000 pieces. Vast quantities of Uncirculated examples were released from Treasury holdings in the mid-1950s and early 1960s, making Mint State coins readily available. However, this MS-67 example places it well above the typical grade range, as most survivors grade MS-60 to MS-64. Population data reflects this rarity in higher grades: only 62 coins have been certified finer by PCGS, with 396 total examples graded across all levels. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, this dollar weighs 26.73 grams and measures 38.1mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The striking quality is notably above average, making this an excellent candidate for the discerning collector seeking a high-grade representative of this accessible yet historically significant date. The 1896 remains an ideal entry point for those building a Morgan dollar collection or seeking a premium example of a readily obtainable Philadelphia Mint issue.
