Description
1913 $2 1/2 Gold Indian Head, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 Indian Head Quarter Eagle represents a notably underappreciated issue in the series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 722,000 pieces. Designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, this coin exhibits the distinctive recessed design characteristic of the series. The present example has been certified by PCGS as MS-63, with Certificate Number 25558431, placing it solidly in the choice uncirculated category. The 1913 is recognized among specialists as possessing decidedly above-average luster for the Indian Head $2 1/2 series, notably superior to typical examples of the 1911 and 1912 issues. The strike quality is generally well-executed, and the coin displays the characteristic light to medium yellow gold color typical of the 1909 and 1910 dates. As is common with Indian Head quarter eagles and half eagles of this era, the surfaces exhibit the typical granular texture of the series. While the 1913 is only marginally less rare than the 1912 overall, the distinction between these issues and the 1909-1911 dates is relatively slight. However, in gem condition (MS-65 or better), the 1913 becomes genuinely scarce and extremely difficult to locate. Population data reflects 1,340 examples graded finer than MS-63, with a total population of 1,801 across all grades by PCGS. This MS-63 example offers an opportunity to acquire an attractive, well-preserved specimen of this undervalued issue.
