Description
1913 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 $2 1/2 gold quarter eagle represents a notable example from the Indian Head series designed by the renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with no mintmark, this piece exhibits the characteristic qualities that distinguish the 1913 issue as an underappreciated date within the series. With a mintage of 722,000 pieces, the 1913 remains only marginally less scarce than the 1912 overall, though in gem condition (MS-65 and above), examples become extremely difficult to locate. The coin is graded PCGS MS-63 (Certificate #25571875) and displays the generally superior striking and above-average luster for which the 1913 is known. The surfaces show the somewhat granular character typical of Indian Head quarter eagles, while the color exhibits the light to medium yellow gold tone characteristic of this period. Population data indicates 1,340 examples have been certified in higher grades, with 1,801 total graded across all grades, reflecting the relative availability of this date in circulated and lower mint state conditions. Technical Details: 90% gold, 10% copper composition; 4.18 grams; 18mm diameter; reeded edge. This represents a solid mid-range example suitable for collectors seeking quality representation of this underappreciated Indian Head issue without the significant premium required for gem or superb specimens, which remain scarce in the current market.
