Description

1926 Philadelphia Indian Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS64. This 1926 $2 1/2 Indian Head Quarter Eagle represents the twelfth and final issue in Bela Lyon Pratt's distinctive recessed-design series before the denomination's production permanently ceased in 1929. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a respectable mintage of 446,000 pieces, this example is certified by PCGS as MS64 (Certificate #18447290). Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this quarter eagle displays the hallmark characteristics of the series: frosty, highly lustrous surfaces with warm golden hues, and occasionally patches of orange-red toning on superior examples. The recessed design, revolutionary for its time, remains one of the most distinctive in American numismatic history. At the MS64 grade level, this coin represents an attractive balance between eye appeal and accessibility for the collector. While the 1926 Philadelphia issue maintains a relatively standard mintage for the series, it remains conditionally scarce in higher grades, particularly MS66 and finer, due to the considerable attrition rate typical of circulating gold coins of this era. Population data reflects 305 total PCGS certifications with only 1,109 examples graded finer, underscoring the rarity of premium specimens. This offering provides an excellent opportunity to acquire a desirable piece from the final decade of this iconic series.
