Description

1874 Philadelphia Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-63. This Type III Liberty Gold Dollar represents a readily available date from the final years of this popular series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 198,800 pieces, the 1874-P is among the most commonly encountered gold dollars in the marketplace, second only to the 1862 in availability across all grades. The coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams with a diameter of 14.3mm and reeded edge. Designed by James Barton Longacre, this example has been certified by PCGS as MS-63 (Certificate #53777710), representing a solid choice-grade uncirculated specimen that displays the characteristic luster and eye appeal expected of the grade. Like other examples from 1874, this coin may exhibit one of several reverse varieties, including full LIBERTY, partial LIBERTY, or missing LIBERTY designations—an interesting characteristic that adds collecting appeal to the date. The population data indicates 970 total PCGS-graded examples with 1,064 pieces graded higher, confirming the relative availability of this issue even in premium grades. An excellent opportunity for collectors seeking a quality Type III gold dollar without the premium associated with scarcer dates.
