Description
1928 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold Piece, PCGS MS-64+. A handsome example of this moderately scarce Philadelphia Mint issue, certified by PCGS under their Plus designation. Designed by the renowned Bela Lyon Pratt, this quarter eagle represents the final years of the Indian Head series, which graced American coinage from 1908 through 1929. The 1928 is notably more elusive in high grades than its immediate predecessors, with this MS-64+ specimen representing a significant step above the readily available lower Mint State grades. This piece exhibits the characteristic qualities collectors expect from the 1928 date: well-struck definition, frosty mint luster, and attractive coloration ranging from light to medium gold with the greenish tint typical of the issue. The reeded edges remain sharp, and the surfaces display the eye appeal expected at this grade level. With a mintage of 416,000 pieces from the Philadelphia Mint, original specimens have become increasingly difficult to locate, particularly in the MS-64 and higher grades where this example resides. The rarity profile of the 1928 is noteworthy for collectors seeking quality examples. While MS-63 and lower Mint State coins remain obtainable, this MS-64+ represents a meaningful jump in scarcity. Gems (MS-65 and above) are quite rare, and specimens finer than MS-65 are extremely scarce in the marketplace. This offering provides an excellent opportunity to acquire a solid representative of this underrated date in a premium grade. PCGS Certificate #55900878
