Description

1913 Philadelphia Indian Head Half Eagle ($5 Gold Coin), PCGS MS-63. This attractive example of the 1913 Indian Head half eagle represents a popular and collectible date from the later years of Bela Lyon Pratt's iconic series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a respectable mintage of 915,901 pieces, the 1913 is readily obtainable in circulated and lower Mint State grades but becomes increasingly scarce in the finer designations. The MS-63 grade represents a sweet spot for collectors seeking quality and eye appeal at a reasonable premium over lower grades. The coin exhibits the characteristic features collectors appreciate in this series: a well-executed strike with finely granular surfaces and excellent lustre typical of well-preserved Philadelphia Mint examples. The surfaces display the attractive light to medium yellow gold color common to this issue, with some specimens showing the greenish tint that occasionally appears in Indian Head half eagles. The 1913 is recognized as one of the better-looking issues of the series in high grades, comparable in overall appearance to the 1912. PCGS Population Data: This coin is certified as PCGS MS-63, Certificate #25202485. Population data indicates 1,237 examples graded higher and 3,174 total specimens certified by PCGS, reflecting the availability of this date in the marketplace. While MS-63 specimens can be located with relative ease, the grade distribution confirms that coins at MS-64 and above become notably scarce, with MS-65 and higher examples representing the rarity tier of this issue. Specifications: 90% gold, 10% copper; weight 8.36g; diameter 21.6mm; reeded edge. A solid representative of the Indian Head half eagle series for collectors building a comprehensive collection or seeking an attractive example of this popular denomination.
