Description
1929 Philadelphia Mint Indian Head Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS-64. This 1929 $2 1/2 gold piece represents a significant offering from the final year of the iconic Indian Head Quarter Eagle series designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 532,000 pieces, this example has been certified by PCGS as MS-64 (Certificate #25243279), placing it well above the typical circulated or lower Mint State examples encountered in the market. The 1929 quarter eagle stands apart as the major condition rarity of the later-date Indian Head $2 1/2 issues. While examples in MS-63 and lower grades remain relatively accessible, this coin's MS-64 grade represents a meaningful jump in rarity. Population data reflects this scarcity, with only 325 examples graded finer than this specimen across all grading services. Gems in MS-65 and above are decidedly uncommon, and superb pieces at MS-67 are recognized as major rarities within the series. Physically, this specimen exhibits the strong strike characteristics typical of the 1929 issue, with excellent lustre and the rich yellow gold color with greenish tint that collectors prize in these coins. The reeded edge and 90% gold, 10% copper composition are consistent with the series standard, with a weight of 4.18 grams. As a Philadelphia Mint issue from the final year of production, this quarter eagle carries both numismatic significance and the inherent appeal of pre-1933 U.S. gold coinage.
