Description
1874 Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-65. This 1874 Philadelphia Gold Dollar represents a classic example of the Type III Liberty Gold Dollar series (1873-1889), designed by the renowned engraver James Barton Longacre. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 198,800 pieces, this issue remains among the most readily available gold dollars of the type, accessible to collectors across all grade levels including gem uncirculated examples. The coin exhibits the characteristic design elements of the Type III series, featuring Lady Liberty on the obverse with the denomination and date on the reverse. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this diminutive coin weighs just 1.7 grams and measures 14.3mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The PCGS MS-65 grade indicates an attractive, well-preserved example with only light imperfections consistent with the assigned grade. PCGS Population: 151 coins have been graded higher, with 198 total examples certified by PCGS across all grades, reflecting the availability of this date in the current market. The 1874 is notable for the existence of several die varieties, including examples with full LIBERTY, partial LIBERTY, and those with LIBERTY missing entirely—a characteristic shared with the 1873 issue and of interest to type and variety collectors. Current market valuation places this example at approximately $1,650. PCGS Certificate #5787119
