Description
1901 Philadelphia $2 1/2 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, PCGS MS66. This handsome 1901 $2 1/2 gold piece represents a classic example of Christian Gobrecht's enduring Liberty Head design, which graced American quarter eagles from 1840 through 1907. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint without mintmark, this piece exhibits the quality and eye appeal expected of a PCGS MS66 designation. The coin displays excellent luster and strike characteristics consistent with the grade, with only minor surface marks visible under magnification. The Liberty Head quarter eagle series remains a cornerstone of American numismatics, and the 1901 Philadelphia issue, with its mintage of 91,100 pieces, represents a date that saw moderate production for the era. While relatively common by Liberty Head quarter eagle standards, the majority of known specimens exist in either uncirculated or proof condition, making circulated examples and lower-grade pieces somewhat scarce. This MS66 example places it solidly in the upper tier of the population, with only 47 examples graded finer by PCGS out of 136 total submissions. Struck from 90% gold and 10% copper, this quarter eagle retains the standard specifications of the series: 4.18 grams, 18mm diameter, and reeded edge. The coin represents both a sound bullion holding and a desirable piece for the collector of pre-1933 United States gold coinage. *PCGS Certificate #05980755*
