Description
1853 Philadelphia Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-63. This 1853 Gold Dollar represents the most common date of the Liberty Gold Dollar series (1849-1889), with a substantial mintage of over 4 million pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Designed by James Barton Longacre, this diminutive gold coin contains 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing just 1.7 grams with a diameter of 12.7mm and reeded edge. The present example has been certified by PCGS as MS-63, with certificate number 64615467. Despite its common date status, this piece offers excellent eye appeal and represents a significant portion of the series' total graded population. Population data confirms the prevalence of this issue, with 1,257 examples certified by PCGS alone. The MS-63 grade places this coin above the typical range where most graded examples congregate (MS-62 to MS-63), yet considerably below the scarcer higher grades where populations diminish substantially. For type collectors seeking a superb Gold Dollar at strong value, this 1853 Philadelphia Mint issue provides an outstanding opportunity to acquire a representative example of this important series.
