Description
1911 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold Coin, PCGS MS-63. This 1911 Philadelphia Mint $2 1/2 represents a desirable example from the middle years of Bela Lyon Pratt's iconic Indian Head quarter-eagle series. Struck from a mintage of 704,000 pieces, the 1911 occupies an interesting position in the series' rarity hierarchy—scarcer than the prolific 1908 and common later dates, yet more obtainable than the elusive 1914. The present specimen has been certified by PCGS as MS-63, a significant milestone as specimens grading MS-64 and above become increasingly difficult to locate. The coin exhibits characteristics typical of the 1911 date, displaying the somewhat granular surface texture and muted luster that distinguish this year from earlier Philadelphia issues. The color leans toward the greenish-orange tone frequently encountered on this issue, though some specimens display lighter yellow hues. Strike quality varies considerably across the 1911 population, with the present example showing the average-to-slightly-soft strike commonly seen, particularly in the feathers of the Indian's bonnet. The reverse is typically well-rendered. Technical Details: 90% gold and 10% copper composition; 4.18 grams; 18mm diameter; reeded edge. PCGS Certificate #58952740. Population data reflects the relative scarcity of high-grade examples: of 1,721 total graded specimens, only 1,295 grade higher than MS-63, underscoring the difficulty in locating gems from this issue. An attractive mid-grade example suitable for both type collectors and series specialists.
