Description

1913 Indian Head Quarter Eagle, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 $2 1/2 gold piece represents a notably underappreciated issue in the Indian Head quarter eagle series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 722,000 pieces, this date occupies an interesting position in the series—only marginally less rare than the 1912 overall, though the distinction between the 1913, 1912, 1909, 1910, and 1911 dates is quite subtle. The present example, graded PCGS MS-63 (Certificate #25573618), exemplifies the quality typically encountered for this issue in circulated and lower Mint State grades. The 1913 is generally well-struck with decidedly above-average luster for the series, particularly when compared to typical examples of the 1911 or 1912. The surfaces display the characteristic granularity common to Indian Head $2.5 and $5 issues, while the color presents as light to medium yellow gold consistent with the 1909 and 1910 dates. Population data indicates 1,338 examples graded finer than this piece, with 1,801 total PCGS submissions, placing this grade in the middle of the distribution curve for the issue. In gem condition (MS-65 or better), the 1913 becomes extremely difficult to locate, with rarity comparable to the finest examples of earlier dates in the series. A few superb MS-67 examples are known to exist, though recent market transactions for such pieces are scarce. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper with a weight of 4.18 grams and diameter of 18mm, this piece represents a solid addition to an Indian Head quarter eagle collection.
