Description
1913 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold, PCGS MS-63. This 1913 Philadelphia Mint Quarter Eagle represents a notable example from the final years of Bela Lyon Pratt's iconic Indian Head design series. The coin displays the characteristic features that define this issue: decidedly above-average luster for the series, well-executed striking details, and the typical light to medium yellow gold coloration associated with this vintage. While the surfaces exhibit the slight granularity common to Indian Head quarter eagles, the overall eye appeal remains strong for the assigned grade. The 1913 occupies an interesting position within the quarter eagle series, occupying a rarity tier only marginally below the scarcer 1912, with distinctions between the 1909-1913 issues being relatively subtle in most grades. However, the 1913 becomes significantly more elusive in gem condition, where examples graded MS-65 or better are extremely difficult to locate. The PCGS population data reflects this distribution, with 1,338 examples graded finer and 1,801 total submissions across all grades. Struck from a substantial mintage of 722,000 pieces, this MS-63 example represents a collectible mid-range specimen of an issue that remains generally underappreciated relative to its availability and eye appeal. The coin's composition of 90% gold and 10% copper, combined with its reeded edge and consistent strike quality, makes it an attractive addition to Indian Head quarter eagle collections.
