Description
1928 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold Coin, PCGS MS-64. This attractive example of the 1928 Indian Head Quarter Eagle represents a significant offering from the final years of this popular series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 416,000 pieces, the 1928 is notably scarcer in higher grades than many of its immediate predecessors. The PCGS MS-64 designation places this coin well above the typical circulated or lower Mint State specimens that dominate the market, making it a desirable find for discerning collectors of early 20th-century gold coinage. The coin displays the characteristic features expected of this issue: well-struck surfaces with excellent frosty luster and pleasing light to medium gold coloration with subtle greenish tones typical of 1928 production. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the reverse eagle and obverse Native American profile are rendered with sharp detail. While MS-64 examples are considerably more elusive than lower grades, they remain obtainable compared to gem MS-65 and finer specimens, which are genuinely scarce and represent a significant step up in rarity and value. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this quarter eagle contains approximately 0.1209 troy ounces of pure gold. The coin is certified by PCGS under certificate number 55900878, providing authentication and consistent grading standards for this valuable pre-1933 gold issue.
