Description
1929 Indian Head $2 1/2 Gold Coin, PCGS MS-64. This Philadelphia Mint quarter eagle represents a significant example from the final year of the Indian Head $2 1/2 series. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this classic gold coin is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams with a diameter of 18mm and reeded edge. The 1929 issue had a mintage of 532,000 pieces, making it readily available in lower grades but notably scarce in higher condition levels. The present example, graded PCGS MS-64 (Certificate #25243279), represents a significant achievement for this particular date. The 1929 is widely recognized as the major condition rarity among late-date Indian Head quarter eagles, with specimens in MS-64 or better grades being surprisingly difficult to locate despite the substantial mintage. The strike quality is typically very good, though some die buckling at the borders is occasionally observed. This piece exhibits the characteristic rich yellow gold coloring with greenish tint and excellent lustre that collectors expect from well-preserved examples of this series. With only 325 examples graded higher by PCGS from a total population of 243 graded pieces, this MS-64 represents a solid mid-range example of an issue that becomes increasingly elusive in premium condition. Gems and superb specimens are genuinely scarce, making this an attractive offering for collectors of late-date Indian Head gold coins.
