Description
1907 $2 1/2 Gold Quarter Eagle, Liberty Head Type, PCGS MS-65. This final-year Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents the conclusion of Christian Gobrecht's iconic design that graced American gold coinage for nearly seven decades. The 1907 Philadelphia issue is notable as the last and most frequently encountered date in the entire quarter eagle series, with robust mintage of 336,294 pieces and exceptional availability in uncirculated grades. The present example has been certified by PCGS as Mint State 65, placing it solidly within the premium uncirculated range with excellent eye appeal and well-preserved surfaces. The coin exhibits the characteristic design elements of the series: Liberty's profile adorning the obverse with the denomination and date, while the reverse displays an eagle with shield and arrows. Struck in 90% gold composition with a reeded edge, this quarter eagle weighs 4.18 grams and measures 18mm in diameter. The technical quality of the strike and luster retention are evident in the MS-65 designation, which reflects only light contact marks consistent with the grade. From a numismatic perspective, while the 1907 is the most common date in the Liberty Head quarter eagle series, the MS-65 grade places this example well above typical market specimens. Population data indicates 742 examples have been certified in higher grades, with a total of 1,441 pieces graded across all conditions. This combination of historical significance as the final year of issue, combined with solid technical quality, makes this an accessible entry point for collectors pursuing the Liberty Head type.
