Description
1887 Liberty Gold Dollar, PCGS MS-65. This 1887-P gold dollar represents a classic example of the Type III Liberty design, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the final years of this popular series. Designed by James Barton Longacre, the coin displays the iconic Liberty head obverse paired with an eagle reverse that defined American gold dollar coinage from 1878 through 1889. The piece is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams with a diameter of 14.3mm and featuring a reeded edge. Graded PCGS MS-65, this example exhibits the lustrous, well-preserved surfaces characteristic of choice uncirculated specimens. The MS-65 designation indicates a coin with full mint luster and only light, scattered contact marks consistent with the grade. With a modest original mintage of just 7,500 pieces, this Philadelphia Mint issue remains one of the more obtainable Type III gold dollars, particularly in higher uncirculated grades where examples are readily available to collectors. Population data reflects 128 examples graded finer than this specimen, with 99 total certified by PCGS, demonstrating the availability of this date in premium condition. The Liberty gold dollar series continues to attract both type collectors and specialists, offering accessible entry into pre-1933 U.S. gold coinage with strong historical appeal and collector demand.
