Description

1917 P McKinley Gold Commemorative Dollar, PCGS MS65. This handsome McKinley commemorative dollar was issued in 1917 to honor the legacy of the 25th President. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint and bearing no mintmark, this example has been graded PCGS MS65, representing an attractive near-gem specimen with strong eye appeal. The coin exhibits the refined artistry of two of America's greatest numismatic designers: Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan, whose collaborative work defined the commemorative coinage program of the early 20th century. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this diminutive issue weighs just 1.7 grams and measures 14.3mm in diameter, with a reeded edge characteristic of gold coinage of the era. The original mintage of 10,000 pieces was modest even by commemorative standards, and examples in this grade are increasingly difficult to locate. Among the 653 pieces certified by PCGS, this MS65 ranks among the finest, with only 626 examples graded higher, indicating strong collector demand for this popular commemorative.
